For establishing Hong Kong’s first zero waste stores

Tamsin Thornburrow

Founder, Live Zero
Location: Hong Kong

Zero-waste might be the latest buzzword, but Tamsin Thornburrow was well ahead of most eco-warriors when she opened Hong Kong’s first zero-waste store, Live Zero, in Sai Ying Pun. Zero-waste is a lifestyle that goes beyond recycling, encouraging people to minimise the amount of waste they produce. Tamsin’s brick-and-mortar store, as well as her online Live Zero shop, encourages Hong Kongers to change the way they consume, supplying them with organic, affordable staples without unnecessary packaging. Tamsin is also an interior designer and founder of homeware shop Thorn and Burrow, also in Sai Ying Pun, that offers a curated selection of handmade, independently designed accessories.

People are not going to change their habits if they can’t afford to do so. But if you show them that they can make a real difference, but keep eating well, and even save some money in the process, then you might get them to make the transition
If you really care, you have to put yourself out – refusing a plastic straw is a great way to start, but it’s not enough if you want to make a difference
