John Hsu’s directorial debut, supernatural horror film Detention, became the highest grossing domestic movie of 2019 in Taiwan within three days of its release. The film, the first ever produced in Taiwan to be adapted from a video game created by Taiwanese software engineers, won him a dozen nominations and two awards at the 56th Golden Horse Awards.
