Russia threatens Japan with severe measures if it provides weapons to Kiev – Observer

Russia threatened Japan on Thursday with “severe measures” if it provides military weapons and equipment to Ukraine, after news about Tokyo’s interest in participating in a NATO support for Kiev.

“Any step in Japan to participate directly or indirectly in supplying the Ukraine of weapons and military equipment used to kill Russian citizens (…) will be considered as an unequivocally hostile act“Russian diplomacy said.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned that if Japan follows such a way, it will face “tougher measures that will cause significant damage to Japan’s interests in the most sensitive areas.”

Zakharova, who released Moscow’s position in a statement, did not specify the measures with which he threatened Japan.

“In the context of accelerated remitization, Japan is getting more and more involved in the conflict over Ukraine,” said Zakharova, quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE.

On Tuesday, Japan manifested NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who visited Tokyo, the availability to participate in a command of the Ukraine Atlantic Alliance, according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

Moscow rejected earlier this week a possible reactive of negotiations with Tokyo on a peace treaty, pending since World War II (1939-1945), due to Japan’s hostile attitude towards Russia.

“At this time, there is no contact with the Japanese authorities ”said the presidential spokesman, Dimitri Peskov.

According to Peskov, Japan “rushed to completely adhere to all hostile and inAMITY measures” against Russia.

Following Japanese criticism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia abandoned in March 2022 negotiations with Japan on the 1945 formal peace treaty.

One of the main conflicts between the two countries is the dispute for the territorial rights of the Curilha Islands, which Japan designates northern territories, occupied by Soviet troops at the end of the war.

Situated between the Russian Peninsula of Kamchatka and the Japanese island of Hokkaido, the 56 Islands archipelago remains under Russian administration, although Tokyo claims the nearest islands.
