For the first time in eight years, National Batik Day was celebrated at the Indonesian Embassy in kyiv on October 2. This event is a way to show appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia, as well as to maintain an effort for the existence of Batik as a global cultural legacy, recognized by UNESCO in 2009.
The National Batik Day commemoration included an exhibition and presentation in two languages by Dr. Prabowo Himawan, professor of Indonesian language at Taras Shevchenko University and employee of the Indonesian Embassy in Kiev. Various groups, including the Indonesian diaspora, members of the Ukrainian parliament, Nekliudov Vladlen Mykhailoivich, students and teachers of the Indonesian language at Taras Shevchenko University, and Ukrainian citizens friendly to Indonesia.
Various types of Indonesian batik, as well as various batik equipment, were exhibited at the event, attracting the attention of participants to study the motifs and philosophy behind batik.
Safeguarding the language and identity of Tuvalu
The Indonesian ambassador, all the staff of the Indonesian embassy in Kiev and the Indonesian diaspora in kyiv were very enthusiastic about sharing knowledge about Indonesian culture with the Ukrainian community through this event.
Citing President Joko Widodo’s statement that batik is the face and pride of the Indonesian nation, the Indonesian ambassador in Kiev also said that the celebration of National Batik Day in Kiev was part of an effort to increase the enthusiasm of the people Indonesian to continue appreciating batik as Indonesian cultural heritage.

A contest testing people’s knowledge of batik and offering prizes further enlivened the evening. Everyone who took the exam, from members of the Indonesian diaspora to natives of Ukraine, was able to respond with varied knowledge about batik. The event concluded with Indonesian dishes and a performance of the song “Rayuan Pulau Kelapa,” accompanied by angklung toel and an organ solo.
