United States tariff increases on Chinese products may exert short-term pressure on China’s trade and economy, but will not affect the country’s long-term positive trend, Sheng Laiyun, deputy director of the National Statistics Department (DNE), said on Wednesday.

Sheng stated that China strongly opposes tariff barriers and US commercial intimidation, noting that such measures damage everyone involved. According to him, the solid foundations and the resilience of the Chinese economy support the country’s confidence to overcome external challenges and achieve their growth goals.

China’s official target is a growth of approximately 5% of GDP in 2025. In the first quarter of this year, the economy grew 5.4% compared to the same period of 2024, up 1.2% compared to the previous quarter.

Sheng also highlighted the country’s accumulated experience in macroeconomic management since reform and opening, indicating that China will continue to adopt incremental policies as the external environment evolves. “We have a robust policy toolbox to face shocks and external challenges,” he concluded.
