China’s coal-rich Shanxi Province extracted 7.16 billion cubic meters of methane from coal beds in the first eight months of 2023, a record for the January-August period, according to the provincial statistics bureau.
Shanxi’s methane production accounted for about 81.8% of the country’s total in the first eight months of this year. Using coal bed methane, a by-product of coal, can reduce mining risks, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate gas shortages.
Shanxi is one of several Chinese regions with abundant resources of coalbed methane, with about a third of China’s estimated reserves of this gas. By the end of 2022, the province’s proven coalfield methane reserves had exceeded 760 billion cubic meters.
