A highway with bridges and tunnels representing 91% of its length was opened on Monday, connecting Chongqing Municipality in southwest China and Shaanxi Province in the northwest.

The 48.7km expressway connects Wuxi (Chongqing) and Zhenping (Shaanxi) districts. With 20 bridges and 11 tunnels, it has one of the highest proportions of bridges and tunnels among expressways in the country, making construction “highly challenging,” according to the Chongqing traffic department.

The new highway has a projected speed of 80 km/h and will reduce the more than three hours of travel between the two districts to less than one. Authorities also hope that the expressway, by connecting several scenic spots along its route, will promote regional integration and the development of ecotourism.
