The international North-South corridor and transit are two of the priority areas of cooperation between Iran and Russia, declared the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Nasser Kanani, during the press conference, Trend reports.

According to him, collaboration between the two countries in the field of transit increases the volume of international economic business.

The spokesperson noted that Iran and Russia are committed to complying with their preliminary and new economic cooperation agreements.

«The drafting of a global strategic document between the two countries is in its final phase. This document can give a strong boost to cooperation between the two countries. “The two countries maintain a joint stance on regional and international issues and in the fight against terrorism,” he noted.

It should be noted that the intergovernmental agreement signed on September 12, 2000 between Russia, Iran and India laid the foundation for the North-South Transport Corridor. In general, several countries have ratified the agreement. (Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Belarus, Republic of Bulgaria, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Sultanate of Oman, Russian Federation, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Türkiye, Ukraine).

The goal of the corridor is to reduce the delivery time of cargo from India to Russia, as well as to northern and western Europe (the delivery time along the current route is more than 6 weeks, and through « North-South» is expected to be 3 weeks).

Meanwhile, the North-South Corridor has three directions in Iran. East Direction: Turkmenistan and Central Asian countries; central address: other Caspian Sea countries; western direction: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia and Eastern European countries.
