A China increased its ability to solar energy generation in 2023 to an unprecedented number worldwide. Last year, the Asian country gained 216.9 gigawatts of solar energy, surpassing its own record of 87.4 gigawatts in 2022, according to a statement released by National Energy Administration (NEA, its acronym in English).

The 2023 growth represents a number greater than the entire generation capacity of USAwhich has the second largest solar market in the world, according to estimates from BloombergNEF. The North American country currently has a capacity of 175.2 gigawatts.

The data still has a discrepancy due to the measurement model. NEA analyzes alternating current capacity, while BloombergNEF uses direct current. This indicates that the difference between the two countries is even greater, according to Bloomberg.

China contributed more than 50% of the world’s installed renewable energy capacity added in 2023, according to the National Energy Administration. Wind and photovoltaic energy products have been exported to more than 200 countries and regions. Last year, the Asian country saw its renewable energy capacity surpass thermal energy for the first time, constituting more than half of the country’s installed power generation capacity, according to official data.
