China significantly expanded its renewable energy generation capacity by 2024, with clean sources representing 86% of the new electrical capacity installed in the country. According to the National Energy Administration (Ane), the sector added 373 million kilowatts, an annual growth of 23%. Solar energy led the expansion, with 278 million kilowatts, followed by wind (79.8 million), hydroelectric (13.8 million) and biomass (1.8 million).
In total, the installed capacity of renewable energy in China reached a record of 1.9 billion kilowatts, accounting for 56% of the national electric matrix. This advance has consolidated the country for the second year in a row with more than half of its installed capacity from clean sources. The generation of renewable electricity reached 3.46 trillion kilowatt-hour, representing 35% of national energy production, highlighting wind and solar generation, which together grew 27% over the previous year.
Accelerated growth reflects China’s commitment to its environmental goals, boosting a green economy and the transition to a more sustainable energy model. The strong expansion of renewable sources reinforces the role of the country as a global leader in decarbonization and the development of clean energy technologies.
