NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called on Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to cease these actions immediately, after receiving a detailed report from a South Korean delegation.

During the meeting, the North Atlantic Council was briefed on the recent presence of North Korean troops in Russia, in a session that also included the participation of other partners from the Indo-Pacific region, such as Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

Rutte criticized North Korea for “fueling a larger conflict in the heart of Europe” and for “undermining global peace and security” by providing Russia with “millions of ammunition and ballistic missiles.” According to a NATO statement, these supplies strengthen Russia’s capabilities in its offensive against Ukraine.

The Secretary General also pointed out that, in exchange for this support, Russian President Vladimir Putin would be offering North Korea military technology and other resources to avoid international sanctions imposed on the Kim Jong-un regime.
