The Japanese Government imposed this Tuesday sanctions against nine members and one entity linked to the Palestinian Islamist group Hamasannounced the spokesperson for the Japanese executive, Hirokazu Matsuno.

“We prepared this list of individuals with the aim of stopping the source of income for Hamas’ terrorist activities.”Matsuno said at a press conference, adding that other measures from the Japanese Government are expected in the future.

The current round of sanctions involves freezing funds and banning transfers to several members of the group, as decided in recent days by several governments, including the United States.

On October 7, the Islamist movement Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen. The attack caused 1,400 deaths, more than 5,400 injuries and more than 230 hostages were taken to Gaza.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as terrorist by the European Union and the United States, bombing several of the group’s infrastructures in the Gaza Strip, while at the same time imposing a total siege on the territory with cutting of water, fuel and electricity supplies.

Since then, the Israeli army has been bombing Gaza in retaliation and, on Friday, expanded ground operations, which have already caused more than 8,000 deaths and more than 20,000 injuries.
