The platform for China’s first commercial spacecraft launch field, in the city of Wenchang in the island province of Hainan, was completed this week.

The project will serve as a dedicated site for China’s new-generation medium-lift rocket, Long March 8, according to Yang Tianliang, president of Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch. The construction of the launch pad introduced several advanced technologies for the first time, including a cone exhaust guide and extrusion water spray for cooling and noise reduction, Yang said.

Construction of the project began in July 2022, and the equipment installation phase is almost complete. Launch pad No. 2 is still under construction, with the covering of the main body of the diversion chute already completed. Installation of equipment on site is expected to be completed by the end of May 2024.
