China has identified a new productive oil and gas zone in the Beibu Gulf Basin in the Southern Sea of China, according to China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) on Thursday. The discovery was made in the Weizhou 10-5 field, where an exploration well of 4,840 meters revealed a daily potential of 370 thousand cubic meters of natural gas and 102 tons of gross oil.

This is the first time oil and gas have been found in granite -buried hills in the region. In recent years, China has expanded its discoveries in diverse geological formations along the coast, strengthening its energy security.

According to CNOOC CEO Zhou Xinhuai, the new reserve will help ensure stable oil and gas supply in the country, reinforcing national exploration capacity.
