Indonesian president urges synergy between ASEAN and UN to maintain peace in region – Asia News

Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the Kakatua Room of the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on September 7. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit.

In his introduction, President Jokowi expressed concern about the current world situation and said that the world’s hope for the United Nations to create world peace continues to grow. President Jokowi also urged ASEAN’s synergy with the United Nations in an effort to maintain peace in the region.

“Synergy between ASEAN and the United Nations is necessary to maintain peace and address important issues in the region, including the Myanmar issue,” President Jokowi stated.

Furthermore, President Jokowi also spoke about the Indo-Pacific. According to the President, ASEAN has once again contributed to the Indo-Pacific region through the implementation of the ASEAN Perspective on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

“As far as the Indo-Pacific is concerned, ASEAN has once again contributed through the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, which has resulted in concrete cooperation,” he added.

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership and outstanding diplomatic efforts in ASEAN and the G20. The UN Secretary-General is also determined to further develop cooperation between the UN and Indonesia and with ASEAN.

“We are determined to fully develop our cooperation in Indonesia and our cooperation in ASEAN. Congratulations to Mr. President for his outstanding leadership in ASEAN during this period,” declared the UN Secretary-General. Also accompanying President Jokowi in the bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary General were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno LP Marsudi, and the Minister Secretary of State, Pratikno.
