Vietnam is the world’s largest exporter of cinnamon, according to a national conference on sustainable development of the sector held in Hanoi on November 15.
Last year, Vietnamese cinnamon accounted for 18.2% of production and 34.4% of the global export market share.
In the first 10 months of this year, Vietnam sent 74,744 tons of cinnamon abroad, for which it earned 220.3 million dollars, 19.2% more in volume but 1.3% less in year-on-year value.
India is the largest importer from Vietnam, with 43.9% of the market share, followed by the United States and Bangladesh.
Hoang Thi Lien, president of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said Vietnam lacks a national strategy for sustainable development of this sector.

A public-private collaboration (PPC) working group on pepper and spices was created at the event.

Representing the group, Trieu Van Luc, deputy director of the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, gave guidelines for the development of the cinnamon sector, such as determining the land fund and the scale of the plantation area; improve institutions, policies and mechanisms; research, select and produce varieties; and develop semi-processing and transformation facilities and consumer markets.
