PETRONAS has launched its third graphene-based solution, ProTough+™, within its Advanced Materials portfolio to capture new growth opportunities in line with its Energy Transition Strategy.

ProTough+™ is an additive that strengthens the strength of composite materials by improving their mechanical properties to achieve component lightweighting, which is key in the manufacturing and supply of lower carbon solutions, such as hydrogen mobility.

Testing using ProTough+™-enhanced carbon fiber-reinforced polymers demonstrates a more than 35% increase in tensile strength.1 This allows for stronger composite parts to be made with fewer materials, enabling better product manufacturing. lighter and cheaper.

“The creation of ProTough+™ demonstrates PETRONAS’ commitment to continue innovating to deliver better solutions that improve operations, address business pain points and create value to support sustainability practices,” said Dr. Mahpuzah Abai, CEO from PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd, during the product launch.

In conjunction with the launch, which took place at the Birmingham Advanced Materials Show, UK, PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB) and HyPerComp Engineering Inc have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to carry out further performance tests with a view to possible implementation of the solution.

Within the framework of the collaboration with HyPerComp Engineering, specialized in the comprehensive design and solution of high pressure vessels, the parties will study the incorporation of ProTough+™ to the manufacturing process of composite coated pressure vessels (COPV).

“We look forward to delivering business solutions with technology and innovation through our strategic collaboration with HyPerComp Engineering. We are confident that the outcome of our joint development will provide the competitive advantage that meets the needs of our shareholders and customers,” added Dr. Mahpuzah.

The JDA is the result of successful initial testing, in which ProTough+™ enabled the composite material to achieve up to 97% strength of the supplied fibers, thereby increasing the burst pressure of high-pressure vessels by up to 5 %.

HyPerComp Engineering CEO Daryl Thompson said: “We were impressed with the improved strength and durability that ProTough+TM has provided in initial testing. “We are excited to design lighter COPVs with this innovative and promising product from PETRONAS.”

ProTough+ is the third graphene-based solution to market, following the successes of ProShield+™, which strengthens the strength of coatings, and ProCharge+™, which extends the life of lithium-ion batteries.
