North Korea fired several ballistic missiles toward waters east of the peninsula on Wednesday, the South Korean and Japanese militaries said, the second test in a week.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the North firing several short-range ballistic missiles from north of the capital Pyongyang at around 6:50 a.m. (10:50 p.m. Tuesday in Lisbon) and said the projectiles flew northeast.
JCS officials said they were communicating closely with the United States and Japan about the launches.but have not provided further details at this time.
Japan’s Defense Ministry says it has detected at least two launchesbut has not yet said what types of missiles they were or how far they traveled.
The Japanese coast guard said it believed the missiles had already fallen in waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan, but urged ships to be alert for possible falling objects.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK said the missiles were believed to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Kim “stressed the need to further increase the number of centrifuges in order to exponentially increase nuclear weapons for self-defense,” North Korea’s state news agency KCNA reported.

Two weeks ago, North Korea resumed the practice of launching trash balloons into South Korea. Pyongyang has sent nearly 5,000 balloons to the South since May.
