Ingredients

  • 1 medium cabbage

  • 1 cup of rice

  • 500g ground meat (can be beef, pork or a mix)

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1 can of peeled tomatoes (or tomato sauce)

  • 1 lemon juice

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Fresh mint leaves (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Water to cook the cabbage

  • Toothpicks

Preparation mode

  • Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut off the central stem.
  • Cook the whole cabbage in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until the outer leaves are soft and pliable. Carefully remove the leaves and set aside.
  • In a pan, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion and garlic until golden.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until it is completely browned.
  • Add the rice and stir well.
  • Add the peeled tomato (or tomato sauce) and mix.
  • Season with salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste.
  • If desired, add chopped mint leaves for a touch of freshness.
  • Take a cooked cabbage leaf, place a portion of the filling in the center and fold the sides inwards.
  • Roll the leaf, forming a cigar.
  • Close the ends of the cigar with toothpicks to maintain its shape.
  • In a large pan, arrange the cigars side by side.
  • Cover the cigars with hot water.
  • Cook over medium heat for about 30-40 minutes, or until the cabbage is completely cooked and the rice is done.
  • Remove toothpicks before serving.
  • Serve the cabbage cigars hot, accompanied by tomato sauce, if desired.
