Ingredients

1 medium cabbage

1 cup of rice

500g ground meat (can be beef, pork or a mix)

1 chopped onion

2 cloves of garlic, chopped

1 can of peeled tomatoes (or tomato sauce)

1 lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh mint leaves (optional)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Water to cook the cabbage

Preparation mode
- Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut off the central stem.
- Cook the whole cabbage in boiling salted water for a few minutes, until the outer leaves are soft and pliable. Carefully remove the leaves and set aside.
- In a pan, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion and garlic until golden.
- Add the ground beef and cook until it is completely browned.
- Add the rice and stir well.
- Add the peeled tomato (or tomato sauce) and mix.
- Season with salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste.
- If desired, add chopped mint leaves for a touch of freshness.
- Take a cooked cabbage leaf, place a portion of the filling in the center and fold the sides inwards.
- Roll the leaf, forming a cigar.
- Close the ends of the cigar with toothpicks to maintain its shape.
- In a large pan, arrange the cigars side by side.
- Cover the cigars with hot water.
- Cook over medium heat for about 30-40 minutes, or until the cabbage is completely cooked and the rice is done.
- Remove toothpicks before serving.
- Serve the cabbage cigars hot, accompanied by tomato sauce, if desired.
