On August 28, 2023, ASEAN Affairs Department Director General Usana Berananda and Demerit Professor Dr. Amara Pongsapich, Thai Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), co-chaired the consultation between Thai representatives to the AICHR and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at the Vie Hotel Bangkok. More than 80 representatives from government agencies, CSOs and academia attended.

During the meeting, the representatives exchanged ideas on how to enhance the role of the Thai representative to the AICHR, by sharing views on important human rights developments in Thailand and ASEAN, including links to other issues, from the environment and mental health to psychosocial well-being, as well as improving the protection of the rights and freedoms of children, women, people with disabilities, migrant workers and other vulnerable groups.

The Interface Meeting between the AICHR and the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) is held

The meeting agreed that the defense of human rights is essential to achieve economic and sustainable development, and would support the inclusion of human rights issues in the Post-2025 Vision of the ASEAN Community, which is currently being discussed. ASEAN member states.

This consultation has been held regularly, is in line with Thailand’s policy of promoting and protecting the human rights of all peoples, and echoes Thailand’s commitment to invite all sectors of society to contribute to efforts in this important agenda. In addition, Thailand aspires to be elected to the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the period 2025-2027 as an ASEAN candidate. Elections are scheduled for 2024.
