Today, the Argentine Republic, in the person of its ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Holger Federico Martinsen, assumed the Presidency of the Board of Governors of said organization, for the period 2023-2024.
Our country was chosen by acclamation, after being nominated by consensus by the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC).
The Board of Governors is one of the two governing bodies of the IAEA, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States.
The Board reviews the financial statements and the program and budget of the IAEA and makes recommendations thereon to the General Conference. It studies applications for admission as a Member State and approves safeguards agreements and the publication of IAEA safety standards. Likewise, it appoints the Director General of the IAEA, with the approval of the General Conference.

This is the fourth time that our country has been honored with this important responsibility, the last time being in this position in the years 1991-92. It constitutes an example of the commitment that our country has with the International Atomic Energy Agency and with the strategic nature that our country gives to nuclear technology.
Our country was chosen by acclamation, after being nominated by consensus by the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC).
Likewise, it is a recognition, by the international community, of the extensive history of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, with more than seven decades of development in this field, which have been based on a sustained commitment to the principles of technological sovereignty and defense of the inalienable right to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
