The Taiwan State Electricity Company (Taipower) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), based in the United States. This development underscores the Taiwanese government’s dedication to advancing net zero emissions goals, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economy (MOEA) announced.
EPRI is a non-profit electrical and energy research institute with an annual research and development (R&D) budget of more than NT$13 billion (US$400 million) and an exchange platform multinational with 850 corporate entities from France, Korea, Japan and 42 other countries.

The pact was signed by Tseng Wen-sheng, acting president of Taipower; and Arshad Mansoor, President and CEO of EPRI, ahead of the TPC-EPRI Forum 2024: Powering Economy-Wide Decarbonization in Taiwan. The one-day forum was attended by local academics, representatives of the Taiwanese government and industry.
Following the signing of the agreement, Taipower will carry out joint research projects with EPRI on net zero emissions strategies, energy center planning and carbon capture demonstration areas.
In order to highlight the importance of the research, Taipower cited the statement of the International Energy Agency, an autonomous entity based in Paris, according to which in 2050 half of the reduction in carbon emissions achieved will be based on emerging technologies today.
Taipower will also become a member of the Low Carbon Resources Initiative, under EPRI, to jointly participate in the R&D of low and zero carbon technologies with American Electric Power Company, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Tokyo Electric Power Company and 51 other international energy organizations, the MOEA added.
