Preparation mode
- In a large bowl, mix the wheat flour with the salt. If you are making a sweet recipe, add the sugar at this point.
- Add the cubes of cold butter to the bowl. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to fold the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, stirring gently after each addition. Stop adding water once the dough starts to come together.
- Gather the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps the butter to solidify again and the dough to rest.
- Preheat the oven according to the recipe you are following.
- After cooling time, roll out the dough on a floured surface and fit it into a pie pan, if applicable.
- Bake as directed in your specific recipe. Keep in mind that for some recipes you may need to pre-bake the dough before adding the filling.
