Giant panda couple Jin Xi and Zhu Yu left the city of Chengdu, in Sichuan Province, heading to Spain at 11:25 am this Monday, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
To ensure the health and safety of the giant pandas during flight, the Chengdu Research Base prepared customized transport cages loaded with fresh bamboo and shoots. Breeders and veterinarians will be on hand to regularly monitor the giant pandas.
After arriving at the Madrid Zoo and Aquarium in Spain, the Chinese team will stay for about three months to help the pandas during the quarantine period, to complete their stress adaptation and behavioral training, and to help them get better adapt to the new environment. In the meantime, they will provide technical guidance and training to local zoological staff.
China and Spain signed an agreement in 2007 to improve the protection of giant pandas and promote cooperation on endangered species and biodiversity. To date, six panda cubs have been successfully born and raised thanks to joint efforts.
