SGX Cares organizes financial training camp for Singapore footballers

Nearly 500 footballers from the Singapore Premier League (SPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL) will head to a different training camp later this month, to learn how to manage their personal finances and investments during their football careers and beyond.

In collaboration with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and as part of SGX Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, SGX Cares, in which financial education is one of the key pillars, the training camp is designed to equip footballers with the fundamentals of financial management and investment, which are essential elements for financial resilience.

Chan Kum Kong, Research Director, Retail & Intermediaries, SGX Group, said: “No matter what profession you choose, we believe you should also take charge of your financial health. You can’t afford to passively save until retirement. We hope that by encouraging footballers to start their investment journey soon, they can better prepare for their retirement from the competitive circuit and safeguard their financial future.

Yazeen Buhari, General Secretary of the FAS, added: “We are pleased to collaborate with SGX Cares on this initiative for our SPL and WPL footballers. The well-being of our footballers is one of the FAS’ priorities, and we believe that financial education is an essential life skill for the next phase of their career, beyond football.

This is not the first time that the SGX Cares financial education initiative has benefited athletes. In 2020, SGX Cares and the Singapore Sport Institute partnered to improve the financial literacy of Team Singapore athletes, while in 2022 a series of workshops were held for the Lion City Sailors Football Club.

SGX Academy will conduct the financial literacy training camp before the SPL season begins in May. In addition to the SPL and WPL first team footballers and coaching staff, footballers will also be encouraged under 21 years of age to attend the training camp.
