Israeli warplanes carried out an attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria on Monday, reportedly killing seven Iranian military advisers, including three senior commanders. The attack, which took place in the Mezzeh district of Damascus, marks an escalation in the conflict between Israel and its regional adversaries.

Eyewitnesses reported emergency scenes at the scene, with rescue workers searching through the rubble of a building inside the diplomatic complex. Emergency vehicles surrounded the area while an Iranian flag flew near the rubble.

Syrian authorities strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous terrorist attack.” Iran’s ambassador to Syria confirmed that the attack hit a consular building in the embassy complex, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps mourned the loss of seven Iranian military advisers, including a senior Quds Force commander. .

Hamas demands ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal as requirements for prisoner exchange deal

Israel has previously been singled out for attacks on Iranian military facilities in Syria, but this episode marks the first time it has targeted the embassy complex directly. The attacks intensified amid Israel’s campaign against the Iranian-backed Palestinian group Hamas, which sparked war in Gaza.

While Israel has remained silent about the attack, the New York Times cited unnamed Israeli sources who confirmed responsibility. The Iranian mission to the UN denounced the attack as a flagrant violation of international law and called on the UN Security Council to condemn it.

Hezbollah, Iran’s allied Lebanese group, vowed retaliation, while several Muslim countries, including Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Russia, also condemned the attack.
