Liu Zhenmin, former vice minister of foreign affairs and under-secretary-general of the UN, has been named successor to Xie Zhenhua as China’s special envoy on climate change, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning announced at a press conference press conference on Monday.
Mao said Xie, while serving as special envoy, made an important contribution to China-US cooperation on climate change and green and low-carbon global development, with wide recognition from the international community.
Liu Zhenmin is a senior diplomat, she said, adding that he has participated in multilateral climate change negotiations as head and principal member of the Chinese delegation several times and, while serving as Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, chaired work in the areas of climate change and sustainable development.
“We believe that in his new role, Special Envoy Liu Zhenmin will continue to intensify dialogue and cooperation with all parties and contribute to the global transition to green and low-carbon development and building a living community for humanity and nature”, added Mao.
