Underwater volcano gives rise to new island in Japan – Observador

The world’s newest island emerged 1,200 kilometers south of Japan, in the Vulcan archipelago, in the western Pacific, following a series of maritime volcanic eruptions. The eruptions will have started on October 21st, however, the one responsible for the formation of the land mass occurred on October 30th.

Yuji Usui, an analyst at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s volcanic division, explains that the island, about a kilometer from Iwoto Island, formerly Iwo Jima, famous for the battle between American and Japanese forces during World War II, is composed of a set of ash and rocks accumulated in the shallow sea, result of the eruption of an underwater volcano.

However, for Usui “the island may not last long”, quotes the AP. “We have to see development”, he assumed.
