Chinese central authorities will add the economic and financial and social affairs offices to the top Hong Kong-Macao body as part of a large-scale administrative modernization, the South China Morning Post reported.

According to the report, the economic and finance office and the social work office will be added to the new Hong Kong and Macau Central Works Office (CHKMWO), with an SCMP source saying this showed “Beijing’s determination to coordinate “improve economic development and mitigate potential financial risks between the two special administrative regions and the mainland, and in particular the Greater Bay Area.”

The governments of Hong Kong and Macau will continue to make their own economic decisions about what is best for their economies under the “one country, two systems” agreement, the SCMP source added.

“The new economic and finance office will contribute to economic coordination and integration with the Greater Bay Area, so that the different cities in the area can obtain better synergies, while maintaining their own focus and strength.”

This new social work office will also serve as a listening post for Beijing and a “bridge builder” between the central government and the people of Hong Kong and Macau.

The governments of Hong Kong and Macau will continue to make their own economic decisions about what is best for their economies under the “one country, two systems” agreement, the SCMP source added.

The changes are part of a major modernization of the Beijing office that oversees Hong Kong and Macau affairs under the State Council, China’s cabinet, and were announced in March.

The reform includes elevating the Office to a higher-level body reporting directly to the central leadership of the Communist Party, and the reorganization is expected to be completed this year.
