China’s president, Xi Jinping, participated on Friday (9) in the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, an event known in Russia as a great patriotic war. The ceremony, held in Praça Vermelha in Moscow, was attended by leaders from over 20 countries and international organizations.
Received by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi walked alongside the host to the main booth. The event began at 10am (local time), to the sound of the anthem A sacred war and with the entrance of the guards of honor. In a speech, Putin stated that the Soviet Union defended peace and freedom “at the cost of tens of millions of lives” and praised the role of the Chinese people in the fight against fascism.
“The victory is sacred, the story should not be distorted and the winners should not be defamed,” Putin said, highlighting the importance of historical memory in times of global instability.
The military parade, divided into historical and modern parts, brought together troops with uniforms and flags from the time of World War II, as well as displaying contemporary and flyfish weapons of Russian aerospace forces. Military formations from over ten countries, including China, also paraded at the celebration.
After the parade, Xi and the other leaders followed the garden of Alexander, where they deposited flowers in the tomb of the unknown soldier and observed a moment of silence. The presence of XI reinforces the sino-russies in the midst of current geopolitical tensions and the appeal by a multipolar international order.
