Chinese President Xi Jinping sent congratulations on the eve of the country’s Elderly Day, celebrated this Friday this year. Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed hope that the elderly will be well taken care of, enjoy their lives and fulfill their desires.
Xi made the remarks in a letter to representatives of elderly people participating in a national voluntary initiative. In his letter, Xi noted that members of the initiative, called “Silver Age Action”, have actively participated in volunteer activities in recent years, applying their knowledge and skills, as well as their areas of competence, to serve the public.
This embodies the spirit of Chinese elders in the new era, Xi commented. Noting that the elderly are a valuable asset to both the Party and the country, Xi urged Party committees and governments at all levels to prioritize work related to the elderly.
The Chinese population aged 60 and over will approach 300 million by the end of 2023. Forecasts suggest the number will surpass 400 million by 2035 and reach 500 million by 2050.
