The 18th World Water Congress began in Beijing on Monday, under the theme “Water for All: Harmony between Humans and Nature”. This is the first time that China has hosted the event, which attracts around 600 international delegates from more than 60 countries and regions, more than 130 international organizations and water-related institutions, as well as nearly 700 water resources professionals from China.
The event has six subthemes: water-human-economy-ecology nexus under a changing environment; promote water efficiency, productivity and services; building resilience for disaster prevention and mitigation; support the health and functions of aquatic ecosystems; establishing sustainable water infrastructure; and innovation for water governance and management.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, China’s Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying said that as the world faces increasingly severe challenges involving water disasters, water ecology and the aquatic environment, it is of great importance to share ideas on water management water, discuss good water management strategies, seek cooperation and development and jointly contribute to solutions for global water governance with a focus on the congress theme.
The World Water Congress is one of the largest congresses connecting water policymakers, researchers and policy professionals across the world.
