Tesla announced on Friday (22) the export of the first batch of megapack batteries produced at its new Shanghai megafábrica in east China. The units were sent to Australia, just over a month after the start of production on site.

This is Tesla’s first megafábrica outside the United States focused exclusively on energy storage. Each megapack can store more than 3.9 megawatts hours, enough to supply about 3,600 homes for one hour. The expectation of the company is to expand at least 50% the global deployments of storage systems by 2025.

With an initial annual capacity of 10,000 units, the new unit will also serve Asia-Pacific markets. Tesla pointed out that the project allows to accelerate production, reduce logistics costs and expand its international presence in the energy sector, using the same lithium battery technology applied to its electric vehicles. “The megafábrica gives us the ability to scale production and efficiency,” said Mike Snyder, Tesla vice president.
