The three astronauts from China’s Shenzhou-18 mission, Ye Guangfu, Li Cong and Li Guangsu, attended a press conference on Wednesday, marking their first public appearance since returning to Earth in November 2024. After 192 days in space, the longest manned mission ever undertaken by Chinese astronauts, the crew reported being in good physical and mental health, with muscular strength, endurance and cardiopulmonary function basically recovered to pre-flight levels.
Launched on April 25, 2024, the Shenzhou-18 spacecraft was a milestone for the Chinese space program. During the mission, the crew performed dozens of scientific experiments in microgravity, materials science, biomedicine and space technology, using specialized cabins and extravehicular payloads. The astronauts also carried out two activities outside the spacecraft, advancing China’s extravehicular capabilities.
Ye Guangfu, mission commander, highlighted the historical significance of the flight, becoming the first Chinese astronaut to spend more than a year in space throughout his career. “I am honored to witness and participate in the significant progress of China’s manned space missions with my fellow team members,” Ye said at the press conference held at the China Astronaut Center in Beijing.
After completing health and wellness assessments, astronauts will resume their regular training, contributing to the next advances in the country’s manned space program.
