The eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai on Saturday launched its first International Cruise Festival to fully capitalize on the success of cruise travel.

The festival, which will run until August 31, will feature a series of new product launches related to the cruise economy, as well as business promotion activities.

Liu Ping, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government, said at the opening of the festival that the cruise industry is of great significance to expanding domestic demand, releasing consumption potential and promoting high-level opening-up. “The city will continue to provide new consumption scenarios and services for the cruise industry to meet customer demand,” Liu said.

The festival is held to boost Shanghai’s position as an international consumer hub and a magnet for more international cruise lines to set up headquarters.
