North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, the South Korean army declared, a week after Pyongyang announced that it had tested a new “hypersonic missile”.
“North Korea launched an unidentified projectile towards the East Sea,” said the South Korean General Staff, which has its own designation for the Sea of Japan.
The launch comes a week after Pyongyang fired what North Korean leader Kim Jong-un described as an “intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile” aimed at deterring “all of the country’s rivals” in the Pacific region.
The test took place during a visit to South Korea by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and was Pyongyang’s first since US President-elect Donald Trump won the presidential election in November.
North Korea says it launched new type of medium-range hypersonic missile
South Korea, an ally of the United States, maintains a tense relationship with North Korea, against which it remains technically at war, since the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
In November, North Korea tested what it claimed was a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the most advanced in the nuclear-armed Asian country’s arsenal. In response, the South Korean army also fired a ballistic missile.
Washington accused Pyongyang of receiving Russian support in exchange for sending troops to fight in Ukraine, but neither Pyongyang nor Moscow have officially confirmed that North Korean forces are fighting for Russia on Ukrainian soil.
