Red Hong Yi

Location: Malaysia

Chopsticks, sand, salt, teabags—anything can be used creatively by Malaysian artist Red Hong Yi. Her work covers a wide range of topics, including women, race and diaspora. For a part-sculpture, part performance art piece that featured on Time magazine’s cover in April 2021, she built a world map from 50,000 green-tipped matchsticks and then set them on fire. The topic: climate change.
