Laurel Chor

Founder, Hong Kong Explorers Initiative
Location: Hong Kong

Realising some of the world’s largest environmental problems lay at her doorstep when traveling the world as a National Geographic Young Explorer, Laurel Chor launched the Hong Kong Explorers Initiative. At its heart, the Hong Kong Explorers Initiative is aimed at educating Hong Kong youth on the city’s nature and encouraging them to actively preserve its ecosystems. Seeking to inspire and inform, Laurel has continued her work as a multimedia reporter with notable coverage of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake, and deforestation in Sumatra. Chor has since gone on to cover a variety of social justice issues both within Hong Kong and globally, her photography and writing appearing in a number of publications including the New York Times, National Geographic, Getty, AFP, Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, NBC News and the Telegraph. In 2020, Chor was given an honourable mention in the International Women's Media Foundation's (IWMF) annual Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award.
