China’s digital transformation has been supported by the growth of patents in the sector, said Shen Changyu, head of the National Intellectual Property (IP) Administration, on Saturday.
The number of invention patents granted in the main sectors of China’s digital economy grew at an average annual rate of 18% from 2016 to 2022, and the total number of valid invention patents in these sectors reached 1.6 million by the end of 2022 , . This accounted for 38% of the country’s patent volume.
Shen revealed the data at the 13th China International Patent Fair in Dalian, Liaoning Province. China has stepped up efforts to build a better patent system, which is key to contributing to digital transformation, he said, highlighting improved examination rules for new technologies such as the internet, big data and artificial intelligence.
“China has grown to become a leading exporter of creative products in the developing world, and IP plays an important part of that growth story,” added Daren Tang, director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization
