A pair of giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, arrived in Washington on Tuesday after a roughly 19-hour journey from southwest China’s Sichuan Province. A Boeing 777F aircraft, the “FedEx Panda Express”, landed at Dulles International Airport, near Washington, at around 10 am local time.
The pandas were loaded onto trucks and taken to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI). The three-year-old animals will have their new home at the zoo as part of an international cooperation program to protect 10-year-old giant pandas.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare for the pandas’ arrival and we are thrilled to welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao to Washington,” said Brandie Smith, John and Adrienne Mars Director at NZCBI, in a statement. “I thank our Chinese colleagues for their collaborative conservation and research efforts, FedEx for providing safe transportation, and our donors and members whose philanthropic contributions make our giant panda conservation program possible,” Smith added.
