More than 120 people died in Tokyo due to heat-related health problems in July, the hottest on record in the country, according to data from the Japanese capital’s Forensic Medical Institute.
Provisional figures indicate 123 deaths from heatstroke, while 3,647 people were taken to hospital due to heatstroke symptoms, 573 more than in the same month last year.
For the past two weeks, Tokyo has been on almost non-stop alert due to high temperatures.
The highest number of hospital visits (304) occurred on July 8, when the daytime temperature in Fuchu, central Tokyo, rose to 39.2 degrees Celsius.
Tokyo authorities are asking people to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated.
This is the first time the death toll from heat has exceeded 100 in the Japanese capital since 2018, when Japan recorded its hottest summer in 72 years, dating back to 1946.
