One of Malaysia’s most loved musical artists, indie-pop singer-songwriter Yuna Zarai is better known to her fans as simply Yuna. Globally, she cemented her success with her third studio album, Chapters, which was featured in Billboardʼs Top 10 Critics’ Choice R&B records of 2016, alongside albums by Beyonce and John Legend,
Back home, the hijab-wearing songstress is applauded for standing up for her religious beliefs in Hollywood.
Here, Yuna describes her work and passions in her own words.
To find your own voice, view everything in a positive light. Sometimes you get caught up in other people’s opinions and you lose your identity as a result. Ignore the ignorant.
My mission is to inspire the younger generation to go further than Malaysia—as far as possible. Never limit yourself, because nobody is going to judge you for going the distance. Life should always be about growth and the never-ending process of learning. Knowledge is power but people always think that they know enough, and are resistant to absorbing new ideas or methods. That’s not how life should be.
Never limit yourself, because nobody is going to judge you for going the distance.
— Yuna Zarai
Success is not about fame or wealth, as they don’t bring happiness. It’s being able to lead a great life with the ability to take care of yourself and your loved ones.
If I could choose a superpower, it would be teleportation—from the US to Malaysia and vice versa, whenever I miss my family and want to see them. Then I wouldn’t have to be stuck on a 17-hour flight.
