Japan and the US announced this Friday the first guidelines for an “extended deterrence”, which includes North American nuclear protection, to address the security challenges posed by China and North Korea.
The document is intended to reinforce the “existing consultation and communication procedures of the Japan-United States alliance related to extended deterrence,” the two governments said in a press release, which did not add details.
The guidelines “also address strategic messaging to maximize deterrence and enhance United States extended deterrence measures, reinforced by Japan’s defense capabilities,” promoting “regional stability and preventing the outbreak of conflicts”adds the statement, cited by the Japanese news agency Kyodo.
The term “extended deterrence” often refers to United States commitment to use nuclear and conventional capabilities to defend Japan in the face of China’s military activities and North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.
The strengthening of military cooperation is announced at a time when concerns have also increased about the potential use of nuclear weapons by Russia, since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022.
Last July, Japan and the United States held the first government-wide talks on extended deterrence, in Tokyo, in a meeting that involved the heads of diplomacy and defense of both countries.
