The incidence rate of tuberculosis (TB) in China has been registering an average drop of 3% per year since 2021, according to Liu Qing, a high official of the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration. Despite the advances, the country still faces significant challenges to contain one of the most fatal infectious diseases in the world.

During an event held on Monday, the date of World Tuberculosis Day 2025, Liu stressed that, although the mortality rate remains low, the number of cases is still high, especially in some regions of the country. Early identification of patients and the reduction of regional inequalities in combating disease was pointed as priorities.

Chinese experts call for greater investment in preventive measures, such as the use of new diagnostic technologies, the screening of asymptomatic patients and the creation of more effective laws for disease control.

National background published in November 2024, China has been able to reduce incidence and mortality rates by 30% since 2012. The goal is to decrease the incidence to less than 50 cases by 100,000 inhabitants by 2025 and less than 43 to 2030.
