High-speed trains in China handled nearly 3.3 billion passengers in 2024, a 13% increase from the previous year, according to the National Railway Administration. These services accounted for 76% of all rail travel in the country, consolidating its position as the main mode of rail transport in the world’s second largest economy.

In total, Chinese railways recorded 4.3 billion passenger trips, an increase of 12% compared to 2023. The volume of cargo transported was also a record, totaling 5.2 billion tons, an annual increase of 3%. Investment in fixed assets in the railway sector totaled 850.6 billion yuan (approximately R$705 billion), driving the inauguration of 3 thousand kilometers of new railways, including high-speed extensions.

By the end of 2024, China’s high-speed rail network has reached 48,000 kilometers, reinforcing the country’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure. Railways are now preparing for record passenger volumes during the Spring Festival period, which began on January 14, traditionally the biggest travel movement of the year, known as chunyun.
