German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he has seen the recent changes with China’s development and that cooperation with Germany is of vital importance for the future of the world during his third visit to Shanghai Municipality on Monday .
During his short stay, Scholz spoke to students at Tongji University, visited German-funded company Covestro’s Asia-Pacific innovation center and strolled along the Bund. His previous visits to Shanghai were in 2011 and 2015.
At Tongji University’s Jiading Campus, Scholz held a dialogue with around 160 students, covering topics such as Germany-China youth exchanges, sustainable development, smart cities and artificial intelligence. He noted that he appreciated the university’s achievements in training international talents and scientific and technological innovation, noting that the institution serves as a bridge for Germany-China cooperation in the field of higher education.
According to the German Chancellor, the global population could exceed 10 billion in the next 30 years, and countries around the world need to make greater efforts to face many associated challenges. He stressed that Germany-China cooperation is relevant not only for the two countries, but also for the future of the world.
Germany and China need to expand cooperation in fields such as climate change, renewable energy development, trade and investment, and innovative technology research and development, Scholz added.
