Bavaria’s deputy president, Hubert Aiwanger, warned that the climb of commercial tensions and the increase in punitive tariffs from the United States can cause serious damage to the global economy and directly affect Germany’s manufacturing sector. The statement was given during a visit to a Battery Exchange Station by Chinese automaker Nio in Zusmarshausen, near Munich.
Aiwanger stressed the importance of maintaining a rules -based international trade system and defended the continuity of economic cooperation with China. “Punitive tariffs – whether by the US against China or the European Union against Chinese products – are counterproductive. Commercial barriers only lead to retaliation and economic loss,” he said.
Speech happens amidst the fear that new tariffs, proposed by former US President Donald Trump, harm especially automakers such as BMW, headquartered in Bavaria, which depend on global supply chains. Aiwanger pointed out that the German industry is particularly vulnerable, as many exporting manufacturers operate with production steps distributed among various countries.
He argued that commercial disputes are resolved through dialogue, not unilateral measures. “The best way is to advance to a global market with minimal tariffs and rules of fair competition,” concluded the vice-leader, reinforcing Bavaria’s position in favor of international economic opening and stability.
