Drones have been deployed to detect cloud structures in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, boosting cloud seeding capabilities to improve ecological environment conditions, the China Meteorological Administration said.

The experiment was carried out from August 29 to September 3 in the Bayanbulak area of Xinjiang. The large drone, measuring 10 meters long and 3 meters high with a wingspan of 20 meters, can fly for up to 40 hours at an altitude of up to 10,000 meters, covering a maximum distance of 8,000 kilometers when fully charged.

According to Cai Miao of the Administration’s Climate Modification Center, the large drone can more accurately identify the timing and conditions of precipitation and increase cloud seeding capacity.

“The deployment of drones in precipitation operations contributes to improving the regional ecological environment, vegetation growth and water conservation capacity,” Cai said.
