“In 75 years, China has achieved an economic, social, cultural and political modernization unprecedented in history,” said Dilma Rousseff, president of the New Development Bank (NBD) and former president of Brazil, in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua, in Shanghai.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 13 signed a presidential order to award national medals and national honorary titles. Rousseff received the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China, China’s highest state honor for foreigners.

“I feel very honored and proud to receive the Friendship Medal from a country that has an ancient history and that today has achieved such important achievements”, said the president of the NBD, highlighting the great meaning of receiving it before the 75th anniversary of founding of the People’s Republic of China.

“Hardly at any time in the past a country managed to transform itself into the second largest economy in the world in 75 years, the country that managed to raise the educational level of its people to compete with the levels of developed countries, (the country) that leads today in science and technology and in the application of innovations in all fields and areas, specifically in industry.”

Furthermore, the president of the NBD highlighted China’s achievement in lifting a huge number of people out of poverty. “I deeply share China’s vision that development must be centered on the people, on their well-being, on improving their quality of life.”

Noting that countries in the Global South have a similar trajectory to China in the past, she said that China acts as a certainty for countries in the Global South, that another model of economic growth, political development, social development is possible.

“Brazil and China have had a very strong presence in environmental forums, because we are countries committed to the generation and search for alternative energy to ensure that climate change is contained.”

“I am committed to contributing to this Sino-Brazilian relationship, of friendship, cooperation and mutual benefit, lasting throughout this century and beyond,” said the recipient of the Friendship Medal.
